THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: You might have gazed in wonder at those mammoth cut-outs of actor Mohanlal in front of theatres in the city during the release of his films. Apart from the size and perfection in drawing, the cut-outs would give an exact picture of the actor’s character in the film, along with the credit line ‘Silpi’. Behind all these giant hoardings is none other than a hardcore Mohanlal fan, James, who hails from Neyyattinkara on the outskirts of the city. It is not just talent, but his intense admiration for the actor, which helps him to be so precise while making the giant cut-outs.

James who goes by the pseudonym ‘Silpi’ is now highly appreciated for his portrait cutouts.

Based in Neyyattinkara, artist James who goes by the pseudonym ‘Silpi’ is now highly reckoned for his portrait cutouts. The portrait painter has been regularly approached for making huge painted cutouts, with his last one being for Mohanlal-starrer ‘Pulimurugan’. At a time when printed flexes are most commonly seen and preferred, the artist feels his works are special for the same reason. Says James, “I used to paint right from my school days and also used to take part in competitions. Portrait painting have always been my forte from the beginning.” At one point of time, the artist even used to make portrait paintings by looking at newspaper advertisements.
